Head of Legal


We are looking for a fearless Head of Legal to be the focal point for all things Legal within Next Insurance. As Head of Legal, you will be providing Legal guidance pertaining to all corporate and compliance matters, while bringing the bulk of the work in-house. The Ideal candidate will not be afraid to say something if something looks wrong, and not afraid to be wrong. Someone who is enthusiastic for rolling up sleeves and getting hands dirty. This will be the only lawyer in the company and must be willing to go into the weeds on legal matters, seek outside counsel when appropriate, and be excited by the prospect of learning the ins and outs of the insurance industry from a legal perspective.

Responsibilities:

Lead review, negotiation and execution of all corporate agreements including confidentiality agreements, partner arrangements, vendor and supplier agreements, etc.

Primary relationship manager for all external legal stakeholders (corporate law firm, insurance law firms, etc.)

Ensure corporate adherence to financial institution, consumer and privacy related laws

Responsible for providing legal perspective on corporate and board level (director) matters, including board minutes, corporate resolutions, etc.

Responsible for implementing, monitoring and enforcing a compliance system to keep the company in good standing with operational practice, licensing needs and all other regulatory authority requirements (filings, etc.)

Oversight of claims process, coverage counsel and claims-related compliance matters

Desired Skills and Experience:

5-6 years of experience at a large firm within the corporate division

Prior startup experience as in-house counsel

Experience with general corporate matters: reviewing and negotiating NDAs, partnership agreements, supplier/vendor agreements

Experience documenting corporate financial transactions (equity and debt fundraising)

Experience devising / building / leading a compliance practice within a startup organization a plus.

Familiarity with GLBA, FCRA, other privacy and financial/consumer-related laws

Experience in a highly regulated industry (and experience working with various regulation authorities) a plus
