Lead Underwriter


We're looking for a lead underwriter who will help us strike a thoughtful balance between leveraging the industry’s experience in assessing risk and thinking out of the box to do so in new ways. This is a highly visible position that will report to our Head of Insurance Product and work closely with colleagues at all levels of the company. The insurance product team is responsible for designing and developing the insurance products our company offers to the small businesses who are our customers the team’s work is critical to the company’s success. The Lead Underwriter will inject industry experience into a team of creative thinkers – and help guide our experimentation and innovation in the areas of underwriting and rating.

Responsibilities

Be a thought partner to the Head of Insurance Product and the Insurance Product Managers – influence design of new insurance products, guide our underwriting strategy. This role would span all lines of business we are active in (general/rofessional liability, workers comp, commercial auto, commercial property, cyber, and others) – with a particular focus on workers comp

Educate the Insurance Product Managers on traditional underwriting techniques we should leverage alongside the innovative risk assessment tools we are building

Research key risks relevant to each of our products as we build out our offering to become a one-stop shop for small business owners in verticals including construction, personal/professional services, retail and others. Work with the team to price these risks intelligently or, in rare cases, underwrite them out. Be a voice of reason in identifying risks we should not take, if they exist

Partner with our Data Science team to build innovative ways of assessing risk

Desired Skills and Experience:

BA/BS degree

10+ years of experience in the insurance industry

8+ years of experience in progressively more senior roles within small commercial insurance underwriting, with at least 5 years focused on workers compensation

Outstanding communication skills and an ability to clearly explain/teach complex insurance terms and techniques

A passion for reinventing the industry – a burning desire to work in a fast-paced startup environment that is challenging the traditional way of doing business

Bonus:[great to have but not required] Some experience in actuarial roles, including both pricing and reserve work
